Melasma Treatment

Melasma is a skin condition where excess melanin is produced, causing hyperpigmentation. This can appear as patches of darker skin, often on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and nose. Melasma is more common in darker skin types, but it can occur with light or dark skin, changing your skin tone and appearance. If you have hyperpigmentation, Preserve your Pretty Skin and Body offers effective melasma treatment at our medical spa in Johns Creek, GA.

What Causes Melasma?

Melasma and other types of hyperpigmentation occur when too much melanin or pigment is formed in the skin. Melanin is released to protect the skin from UV rays, which is why the skin tans or becomes darker with sunlight exposure. One of the common causes of melasma is sun damage from years of too much UV exposure. The excess melanin creates darker pigmented skin cells in the epidermis, dermis or both that create the dark splotches on the skin.

Another cause of melasma is hormone imbalance. Women are the most likely to experience this skin condition (an estimated 90% of people with melasma are female). This hyperpigmentation often occurs during pregnancy or menopause when there are major hormonal fluctuations. It can also be triggered by taking hormones such as birth control pills or using other hormonal birth control methods.

Facial Pigmentation Removal

If you have dark spots or patches on your skin that you want gone, there are a few different treatments for melasma that we offer at Preserve your Pretty Skin and Body med spa. The treatment we will recommend depends on your skin type, location of dark spots and whether the hyperpigmentation is on the skin’s surface or deeper in the dermis. Some of the possible treatments include topical bleaching creams, laser IPL/photofacial treatments, chemical peels and laser resurfacing.

You do not need to live with melasma impacting your skin’s appearance. If you have dark spots or patches on your skin, there are treatment options for facial pigmentation removal.
