Scarring is your skin’s natural response to repairing deep wounds. There’s an increase of collagen inside of a scar’s foundation. Collagen is a kind of protein that forms strong and flexible fibers to close up a break in the skin.
Scar tissue tends to be a different color from the surrounding skin.
With a little exfoliation, microdermabrasion, or just the passage of time, most scars do fade. But every once in a while, something goes wrong with the scar formation process.
Have you noticed a scar that’s getting bigger and darker with time, instead of smaller and smoother?
Odds are, you have a hypertrophic or keloid scar.
Scars That Remain Longer Than Others
Keloid and hypertrophic scars are both the result of excess collagen formation in the scarring process. The collagen just keeps on growing, and it’s not always easy to tell why.
The main difference between hypertrophic and keloid scars is that hypertrophic scars have a limit while keloid scars don’t.
Hypertrophic scars are reddish or pink raised marks that form easily on people with fair complexions. Quite often, this excess scar tissue is due to some kind of irritation. It may be that the wound didn’t close up properly or kept ripping open.
Hypertrophic scars also commonly grow around body piercing sites. Whatever the cause, hypertrophic scars tend to only grow around the site of the original injury.
Keloid scarring is more common in people of color with dark-pigmented skin. Keloids bubble up and grow well beyond the borders of the original site of injury. They can even form branches of scar tissue on the skin.
Keloids are firm and large and difficult to treat. Even after removing keloid scars, then tend to grow right back again.
