Labiaplasty Post-Op Instructions

Happy beautiful Afro-American woman.

Over the years, the genitalia of a woman goes through changes that are caused by a variety of things like childbearing, hormonal fluctuations and just simply getting older.

Dr. Myla Bennet, our Johns Creek plastic surgeon can perform a labiaplasty, which is a surgical procedure that improves the aesthetics and shape of the female genitalia.

After undergoing this procedure there will be some guidelines that you should follow. Making sure to follow the recommendations below will help ensure that you have a smooth and proper recovery.

Rest and Don’t Over Exert Yourself

For the first few days after having a labioplasty, it’s important to get your rest. Don’t do any unnecessary exertion, swimming, excessive walking, or sitting for too long. When resting it’s best to lay on your back and not sit directly on the treatment area. Sexual intercourse may be resumed after four weeks, as can exercise and straddle activities like cycling.

Caring for The Surgical Site

For 10 days post-op gently wash the incision area each time you use the restroom. Apply the recommended ointment to the sutures and place a piece of gauze between your labia. Do not take a bath but rather take a shower, and pat your labia dry, don’t rub it. Wearing loose cotton underwear is recommended for four weeks.

Take Your Medications

If you were given an antibiotic (whether it’s a topical that you apply directly to the area, of a pill that you swallow) make sure to take it as recommended to prevent infection.

Having some discomfort after your labiaplasty is to be expected. Usually, we prescribe you a specific medication to help. Also, placing an ice pack on the area is useful for reducing pain, swelling, and inflammation.

Dangerous Side Effects

If you have any of the following side effects, you should seek medical attention:

  • Increased swelling or bruising
  • Swelling and redness persist after a few days
  • Increased redness along the incision
  • Pain that isn’t relieved by medication
  • Yellowish or greenish drainage from the incision or a foul odor
  • Bleeding from the incisions that is difficult to control with light pressure
  • Loss of feeling or motion of the surgical area
